Een korte introductie op deze plek II
Het Industriegebouw waar we vandaag zijn werd in 1951 opgeleverd door het architectenbureau Van Tijen en Maaskant. Het was een prototype, de eerste van de reeks verzamelgebouwen van het bureau en de onmiddellijke voorloper van het Groothandelsgebouw. Het concentreerde bedrijven, kantoren en werkplaatsen in één blok, met allerlei voorzieningen voor het personeel zoals een kantine, een toneelzaal en hangpleintjes en zelfs een paar woningen voor de concierges, allemaal op de bovenste verdieping.
Het is een collectief gebouw en ook als zodanig vormgegeven, de individuele ruimten zijn niet benadrukt. Het is grootschalig en stedelijk, naar de smaak van Maaskant en met een stoere en sobere werkmanssfeer. Maar in de krant werd destijds ook geschreven dat het Industriegebouw ‘prettig en vrolijk’ was, ‘licht en kleurig’ en met een vriendelijke, zwierige trap in de hoofdingang ‘die als een danseres door alle verdiepingen heen omhoogzwiert’.
Er valt nog veel meer over te vertellen, maar ik wil hier ingaan op één specifiek aspect, dat aansluit op het thema van vanavond, namelijk het opdrachtgeverschap: wie heeft dit gebouw tot stand gebracht?

A short introduction to this place I
The building we are in today is the Groothandelsgebouw; the Wholesalebuilding, opened 65 years ago in 1953, where wholesale companies would sell their products such as ironware, perfumes and shampoos, curtains and furniture and what not to retailers and craftsmen all over the city. It was a gigantic beehive in which hairdressers, carpenters and plumbers drove in with trucks, cars, bicycles or hand carts, taking the viaduct at the back or the elevated roads in the front to exit fully loaded with products and devices needed to run their businesses and shops.

Rotterdam Internationale Architectuurstad
Beste dames en heren,
Er is mij gevraagd vandaag iets te zeggen over Rotterdam als internationale architectuurstad. Is het echt de bruisende hotspot voor architectuur waar internationaal alle ogen op gericht zijn? En wat betekent dat voor de toekomst? In de vraag schuilt een zekere scepsis en ook de behoefte aan een kritische blik die de huidige hoera-stemming even wat afkoelt of in ieder geval in een breder perspectief zet; die taak neem ik graag op me.

A City of Comings and Goings
Scrolling through the long list of victims of Friday 13 November 2015 in Paris, we see a heart-rending portrait of a young cosmopolitan generation from very diverse backgrounds: from the banlieues to the world of international architecture. They are not only lucky students who have seen the world on fellowships or foreign tourists enjoying themselves in Paris’s concert venues and trendy bars. Some of the victims were French citizens who had emigrated from Chile as children; others have parents who emigrated from Algeria or Congo in the 1970s.
The victims represent an urban class that is extremely mobile, with networks of relations that spread across the whole world that can be quickly mobilised for work or a place to stay.

Nieuwe energie Hofbogen
"Wordt het nog wat, met De Hofbogen in Rotterdam? Crimson Architectural Historians pleit voor een lange adem en pakt de draad na de werkzaamheden in 2013 te hebben afgerond, op eigen initiatief weer op. Zij bekeken hoe het scenario uit 2008 voor transformatie van het voormalige treinviaduct in Rotterdam-Noord op een andere manier te realiseren is. Door in te spelen op de energie en kennis van bewonersinitiatieven, ondernemers en andere partijen rondom de lijn en langzaamaan een ketting van juweeltjes te rijgen..."

Hurkende reus aan de Maas
Bijna twintig jaar geleden ontwierp Rem Koolhaas De Kunsthal, een inspirerend meesterwerk dat het eigenzinnig karakter van de stad onderstreepte en de stad vooruit hielp. Nu hurkt er een plompe reus aan onze skyline, De Rotterdam, de cynische bevestiging van het bestaande gebrek aan verbeelding. Wat een gemiste kans voor Rotterdam, vindt Wouter Vanstipthout.

“Rotterdam moet stoppen met de bouwwoede en een nieuwe identiteit ontwikkelen”
In februari besteedde het VPRO programma De Slag om Nederland een onderwerp aan de leegstand in Rotterdam en voorspelde dat Rotterdam een spookstad zou worden. Architectuurhistoricus Wouter Vanstiphout bekritiseerde in dit programma het bouwbeleid van de gemeente Rotterdam. Op Vers Beton reageerde Tim de Bruijn vervolgens met een opiniestuk waarin hij Vanstiphout feitelijke onjuistheden verweet. Is het allemaal echt zo hopeloos gesteld met de stad? Of is er toch nog hoop?

Braudels Donkey
“The wind of rebellion has swept across the Mediterranean from North Africa towards Southern Europe”. This is a quote by the Belgian Political Scientist Eric Toussaint, who blogs for the Left Wing site International Viewpoint.1 His viewpoint is far from unique, hundreds of similar enthusiastic appraisals of the Arab Spring and the anti austerity demonstrations of the past year can be find in books, magazines, blogs and twitter accounts in Europe and the United States, by the superstars of neo-Marxism Mike Davis and David Harvey, and their myriad fellow travellers.
It seems that the Mediterranean has become a zone of promise for the end of capitalism. The images of demonstrations by angry youths in Syntagma square in Athens, Puerta del Sol in Madrid, Habib Bourguiba avenue in Algiers, Tahrir Square in Egypt, blend into each other, and become one single panorama of urban revolution. Everywhere we see the monumental squares, dominated by huge bureaucratic buildings, normally congested traffic roundabouts filled with masses of flag waving citizens, who set up camp and refuse to leave until their demands are met.

De scheiding van markt en overheid
In Rotterdam woedt al een paar maanden een felle discussie over de rol van de Gemeente in het bouwbeleid, met name bij grootschalige projecten in het centrum van de stad. Het meest recent is de kwestie ‘Forum Rotterdam’, een voorstel van het architectenbureau OMA voor een immens kubusvormig gebouw aan de Coolsingel, met daarin een high-end shopping mall, kantoren, appartementen en de nieuwe behuizing voor het Historisch Museum Rotterdam. Het project wordt fel bekritiseerd door onder andere een groep winkeliers die zich zorgen maakt of het gebouw – in deze tijden van afnemende behoefte aan winkeloppervlakte – de finale doodslag zal geven aan de toch al worstelende zaken aan de Lijnbaan en de winkelstraten daarbuiten. Voorstanders zeggen daarentegen dat de winkeliers er juist van zullen profiteren, omdat een dergelijk ‘concept’ weer winkelaars naar Rotterdam zou trekken die er anders niet zouden komen.
