Post-Growth City research report

1 October 2024

Post-Growth City is a self-initiated design research by BURA and Crimson, towards a sustainable and just city. This research reflects on the way in which urban regions are designed in a fundamentally different way. This involves looking for ways of development in which the dominant influence of economic growth thinking is reduced and space is given to other forms of growth.

Post-Growth City is not a standard research project, but an exploratory and agenda-setting project, which asks new questions based on social urgency. We see for ourselves that within the current spatial-financial system, we are not making any progress with our projects in terms of social and sustainable ambitions. Post-Growth City explores an essential alternative and a new moral ambition for urban planning, and indicates how spatial design can increase its impact on society.

The result of the research consists of a historical perspective, a diagnosis of the current system, a manifesto with 10 principles, an Action Agenda with a road map and conclusions for the follow-up. The research was carried out in collaboration with the municipalities of Amsterdam, Rotterdam and various experts, and with support from the Creative Industries Fund NL.
